Thanksgiving week at JFK, LaGuardia and Newark: day by day
Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26, 2026. Travel builds from the weekend before and peaks twice: on the days just before the holiday and on the Sunday after, which has set airport screening records in recent years. Here is how the week usually plays out for a car service to JFK, LaGuardia and Newark.
| Day | What to expect | Our advice |
|---|---|---|
| Fri Nov 20 to Mon Nov 23 | Early holiday travelers and international family arrivals; airports busy but manageable | The easiest days to fly. Book arrivals for visiting relatives now. |
| Tue Nov 24 | Departures climb through the afternoon and evening; heavy traffic on the Van Wyck and Belt Parkway | Add extra time to your normal drive and pick an earlier flight if you can. |
| Wed Nov 25 | One of the busiest departure days of the year; Macy’s balloon inflation draws crowds to the Upper West Side | Leave much earlier than usual and avoid evening pickups near the Museum of Natural History. |
| Thu Nov 26 | Parade morning closes streets from Central Park West to Herald Square; airports quieter by midday | Fly midday or afternoon if you can, and plan Manhattan pickups outside the parade route. |
| Fri Nov 27 and Sat Nov 28 | Shopping crowds in Midtown; return trips begin on Saturday | Saturday returns are calmer than Sunday. |
| Sun Nov 29 | The heaviest return day: crowded terminals and long lines at the curb, especially in the afternoon and evening | Book your arrival pickup well ahead. We track your flight, so a late landing is not a problem. |
| Mon Nov 30 | Business travel restarts alongside late holiday returns | Morning departures to Manhattan meetings need a buffer. |
When to leave for the airport
On normal days, our JFK departure time guide explains how to plan your pickup. During Thanksgiving week, add time on top of that: security lines are longer, terminal roads back up, and a single accident on the Van Wyck or the Belt Parkway can slow everything. For an international flight on the Tuesday or Wednesday before the holiday, err on the side of arriving very early.
From Long Island to JFK
From Nassau County, most trips use the Southern State or the Long Island Expressway to the Cross Island or Belt Parkway, or the Van Wyck. From Valley Stream, our home base, JFK is a short drive, so we can often reach Nassau homes quickly even on busy days. From Suffolk County and the Hamptons, holiday traffic on the LIE and Sunrise Highway can add a lot of time, so plan an earlier pickup; see our JFK to the Hamptons guide.
From Manhattan to JFK, LaGuardia or Newark
LaGuardia is usually the closest airport to Midtown and the Upper East Side, but its approach roads jam quickly on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Newark can be the better choice from the West Side and Lower Manhattan, depending on tunnel traffic. If you are still choosing a flight, our JFK vs LaGuardia vs Newark guide compares them. Hotel guests can also read our hotel to airport departure guide.
Picking up family who are flying in
For arrivals, send us the flight number rather than a pickup time. We follow the flight, adjust for delays, and your chauffeur meets your guests at arrivals, so nobody waits at a crowded curb with luggage. For several relatives on different flights, we can send separate cars or plan one route that collects everyone. See all our airport car service options, including JFK, LaGuardia and Newark.
The Thanksgiving Day Parade
The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade runs along Central Park West and through Midtown to Herald Square, and streets along the route close to vehicles. If you plan to watch or bring children, arrive very early and agree on a drop-off and pickup location outside the closures. See our Thanksgiving Day Parade car service page.
Family arrivals
Big family gatherings mean many flights, and a private car with meet-and-greet service beats a chaotic curb. Give us each flight number and we coordinate multiple vehicles or a single trip that collects several guests. Tell us about children, car seats and extra luggage in advance.
From Long Island, Connecticut and New Jersey
Holiday traffic builds on the bridges and tunnels into and out of the city. If you are traveling to a holiday dinner in Manhattan or on Long Island, plan a buffer and consider a pickup earlier in the day. We serve Long Island, Connecticut and New Jersey.
Restaurants and dinners
Many restaurants offer Thanksgiving menus with fixed seatings, so confirm your reservation time and plan the ride around it. A scheduled return pickup after the meal avoids the scramble for a car at the end of the evening.
Shopping and holiday weekend
The weekend after Thanksgiving brings shopping crowds, and Fifth Avenue and Midtown fill quickly. If you plan a shopping day, see our guide to a luxury shopping day and book early.
Booking early matters
Holiday weekends fill up quickly. Reserve as soon as your travel plans are set and give us your addresses, flight numbers and passenger counts.
Weather and winter conditions
Late November can bring rain, wind or early snow. Storms slow the roads and cause flight delays, so give yourself extra time and keep an eye on your flight status. If conditions change, tell us as early as you can so we adjust.
Late-night arrivals
Holiday flights often arrive late. Because we track your actual landing time, you do not need to guess when to be at the curb. We plan the pickup around your arrival and any baggage delays.
Traveling with older relatives and children
Tell us about mobility needs, car seats and extra luggage. We plan the right vehicle and the best pickup point, and we help with bags at both ends.
The Sunday return
The Sunday after Thanksgiving is among the busiest travel days of the year. Roads back into the city fill up and airports are crowded. If you can, leave earlier than usual or return on Saturday, and book the pickup as soon as your plans are firm.
