JFK vs LaGuardia vs Newark: Which NYC Airport Should You Use?
New York has three major airports, and the right one depends on where you are going, which airline you fly and how much traffic you can stand. Here is a plain comparison.
JFK: the international gateway
John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens is the region’s main international hub, with the widest choice of long-haul flights and airlines. It is also the airport farthest from Manhattan on most routes, so plan extra time, especially at rush hour. It is the natural choice for trips to Brooklyn, Queens, southern Long Island and the Hamptons.
LaGuardia: closest to Midtown
LaGuardia, also in Queens, is the closest major airport to Midtown Manhattan and is popular for domestic and short-haul business travel. Its position beside the Grand Central Parkway means traffic can build quickly, so a reliable pickup time matters. It is convenient for Manhattan, Queens, Nassau County and the North Shore.
Newark: the New Jersey option
Newark Liberty International sits in New Jersey and is a major hub for United Airlines. It is often the best choice if you are travelling to New Jersey, and can be competitive for Manhattan depending on the tunnel and bridge traffic. Add time for the Holland and Lincoln Tunnel approaches.
How to choose
- Going to Long Island or the Hamptons: JFK or LaGuardia, or Long Island MacArthur if you can fly there.
- Going to Manhattan: LaGuardia is closest, but compare fares and airlines across all three.
- Going to Connecticut or Westchester: LaGuardia, or Westchester County Airport for a shorter trip.
- Going to New Jersey: Newark.
How a chauffeur simplifies each airport
Every airport has its own curb rules, pickup areas and traffic patterns. A private chauffeur monitors your flight, confirms the pickup point before you land and helps with bags. See our airport pages for JFK, LaGuardia and Newark.
What about Westchester and MacArthur?
Two smaller airports are worth a look. Westchester County Airport serves Westchester and Fairfield County and is often much quicker to move through. Long Island MacArthur Airport in Islip serves Suffolk County and is a shorter drive to the South Shore and the Hamptons. See our Westchester and MacArthur pages.
Pickup tips at any airport
- Give your airline and flight number so your chauffeur can track arrivals and delays.
- Confirm the pickup point before you land; terminals and curb rules differ.
- Keep your phone on and reachable after landing.
- If you are on an international arrival, allow time for customs and baggage.
When flights change
Delays and early arrivals are common. Because your chauffeur follows the actual arrival time, you do not pay for a pickup that moved and you are not left waiting at the curb. If your plans change entirely, contact us as early as you can so we can adjust.
Traffic and travel time by airport
Traffic patterns differ at each airport. JFK is served by the Van Wyck Expressway, the Belt Parkway and the Nassau Expressway, all of which can back up at rush hour and on summer Fridays. LaGuardia is reached through the Grand Central Parkway and the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway approaches, and Midtown traffic can slow the last miles. Newark depends on the New Jersey Turnpike, Route 1&9 and the Holland and Lincoln tunnels, so a single incident can add significant time. Because conditions change daily, your chauffeur chooses the route from live traffic rather than a fixed plan.
Airlines and hubs
Airline networks often decide the choice. JFK is a major hub for JetBlue and Delta and hosts many international carriers. LaGuardia serves Delta, American and other domestic and short-haul flights. Newark is a hub for United. If you have a loyalty status or a preferred carrier, that will usually point you to one airport, and the ground trip is the next thing to plan.
Which airport for which destination
- Midtown and the Upper East and West Sides: LaGuardia is often the closest, JFK and Newark are alternatives.
- Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn: JFK and Newark are both reasonable depending on traffic.
- Queens and Nassau County: JFK or LaGuardia.
- Suffolk County and the Hamptons: JFK, LaGuardia or MacArthur.
- New Jersey: Newark, with Teterboro for private aviation.
- Connecticut and Westchester: LaGuardia or Westchester County Airport.
Peak times and how to plan around them
Early mornings, late afternoons and Sunday evenings are the busiest periods at all three airports. Holidays and summer weekends add more traffic. For departures, leave enough time for traffic, check-in and security; for arrivals, allow for baggage claim and, on international flights, customs.
Private aviation options
If you fly privately, Teterboro in New Jersey, Westchester County Airport and Long Island airports such as Republic and East Hampton offer alternatives with quicker ground access. See our Teterboro, Republic and East Hampton Airport pages.
Costs to consider beyond the fare
The cheapest ticket is not always the cheapest trip. Compare baggage fees, the cost of getting to and from each airport and how much time you lose in traffic. A slightly higher fare into an airport closer to your destination can save money and hours on the ground.
Family and accessibility considerations
Travelling with children, older relatives or mobility needs changes the calculation. Shorter walks to gates, easier curbside access and predictable pickup points matter more than a small difference in drive time. Tell your chauffeur about strollers, wheelchairs or extra time needs and we plan the pickup point and vehicle around them.
Loyalty status and lounges
If you hold status with a particular airline, the airport where that carrier has its main operations usually offers the best lounges and rebooking options. That can outweigh a modest difference in ground travel time, especially on long international trips.
Delays and rebooking
Weather and air traffic control programs affect all three airports differently from day to day. If your flight is delayed or rebooked, contact your chauffeur as early as you can. We track live flight data and adjust, but a quick message helps us handle changes airlines do not always publish in time.
A simple decision checklist
- Start with your final destination, not the cheapest fare.
- Compare total travel time door to door.
- Check your airline’s terminal and any lounge access.
- Add a traffic buffer for the day and time you travel.
- Book your ground transportation as soon as your flight is confirmed.
