Start with your airline’s guidance

Airlines publish recommended arrival times at the airport, and international flights typically ask for more time than domestic ones. Use your airline’s guidance as the anchor, then add your travel time and a buffer for traffic.

Add travel time from your starting point

  • Manhattan: allow generous time; rush-hour traffic and tunnel or bridge delays can double a typical trip.
  • Brooklyn and Queens: shorter distances but heavily used parkways.
  • Long Island: the Southern State, Belt and Van Wyck are common routes and can back up quickly.
  • Connecticut and Westchester: I-95 and the Hutchinson River Parkway can be slow, and the Whitestone and Throgs Neck bridges add crossing time.
  • New Jersey: tunnel and bridge approaches, plus the Belt and Van Wyck, mean a longer and less predictable trip.

Add a traffic buffer

Friday afternoons, Sunday evenings, holiday weekends and bad weather all lengthen the trip. On those days, add a larger buffer. An early pickup costs you a little waiting; a late one can cost you your flight.

Security and check-in

Security lines vary by season and time of day. Programs such as TSA PreCheck and CLEAR can shorten the wait, but they do not remove the need for a buffer. Check your terminal’s current security wait guidance if you can.

Baggage and family travel

Checked bags, strollers and children slow the process. If you have a large group, add extra time and tell us the passenger and luggage count so we plan the vehicle and the timing.

Let your chauffeur set the plan

Give us your airline, terminal and flight time, and we recommend a pickup time based on the day’s conditions. On the day, your chauffeur watches traffic and keeps you informed. See our JFK car service page and our JFK vs LaGuardia vs Newark guide.

Early-morning and late-night flights

Early-morning departures avoid rush hour but come with less sleep, and night flights get caught in the evening rush before clearing. For very early flights, plan an earlier pickup than you think you need because the first hour at the airport can be busy with other early departures.

Holiday and summer travel

Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s and summer weekends are the busiest periods at JFK. Expect heavier roads, longer lines and fuller parking. Build in extra time, and consider booking your ride early, since holiday pickups fill quickly.

Terminals and curb rules

JFK has several terminals, and the road layout can confuse first-time visitors. Confirm your terminal before you leave and share it with us. Your chauffeur plans the drop-off point at the right departures level and helps with bags.

If you are running late

If you are late leaving, tell your chauffeur straight away. We watch traffic, choose the fastest route and share the realistic arrival time so you can talk to the airline if needed. Some airlines will help on the day, but do not rely on it.

A quick mental checklist

  • Know your terminal and airline’s recommended arrival time.
  • Add your drive time and a traffic buffer.
  • Confirm the pickup time and address the night before.
  • Keep documents and boarding passes ready.

Flying at Thanksgiving or Christmas?

Holiday weeks need more time than the advice above. Our Thanksgiving week airport guide shows the busiest days at JFK, LaGuardia and Newark for November 2026 and how much earlier to leave from Long Island or Manhattan.
