Hamptons Summer Traffic: The Best Time to Leave NYC

Every summer weekend, thousands of cars funnel onto a few roads heading east. The right departure time can save an hour or more. Here is how to plan around it.

Why traffic is so heavy

The Hamptons are reached mainly by the Long Island Expressway and the Southern State Parkway, which merge into Sunrise Highway and Montauk Highway. There are few alternatives, so a single accident or a busy Friday can back traffic up for miles.

Peak periods to avoid when you can

• Friday from mid-afternoon through the evening, heading east.
• Saturday morning, when late arrivals join the flow.
• Sunday afternoon and evening, heading west.
• Holiday weekends such as Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Labor Day.

Better times to travel

Early morning departures, Thursday evenings and Monday returns are typically lighter. If you have flexibility, arriving midweek and leaving Monday morning makes for a much easier trip.

The Long Island Rail Road and jitney buses serve the Hamptons, and small planes and helicopters serve East Hampton and Gabreski airports. A private car is best when you want door-to-door service, luggage space and flexible timing.

Planning your return

Sunday evenings are the busiest return window. If you must leave then, expect a longer drive; a Monday morning departure is usually much lighter. Tell us your preferred time when you book the outbound trip so we can plan both directions.

The two main routes explained

Most drivers take either the Long Island Expressway east and connect to Sunrise Highway via Route 111 or the William Floyd Parkway, or the Southern State Parkway to Sunrise Highway (Route 27). After the Hampton Bays area, Montauk Highway carries traffic through the villages. Both routes can back up, and one accident can lock everything. That is why real-time decisions matter more than a fixed plan.

Holiday weekend playbook

• Memorial Day: the traditional start of the season; expect the heaviest traffic of early summer.
• Fourth of July: heavy in both directions, with fireworks and parties along the route.
• Labor Day: the last big weekend, with a very heavy Monday return.

On holiday weekends, leave earlier than usual, bring water and snacks and expect delays even off-peak.

Working from the back seat

A long drive is easier when you can be productive. In a private car you can take calls, answer email and prepare for meetings, or simply rest and arrive relaxed. Your chauffeur handles the driving and the navigation.

Sunrise Highway and village traffic

Even after the highway, village centers such as Southampton, Bridgehampton and East Hampton can be slow because of local traffic, pedestrian crossings and weekend crowds. Expect the last few miles to add time, and plan pickups and check-in windows with that in mind.

Group trips and weekend house shares

Share houses often travel together, and groups tend to leave at different times. Coordinating one vehicle or a small convoy simplifies arrival times and luggage, and a set pickup point avoids confusion at busy Manhattan curbs.

Helicopter, seaplane and train options

Helicopter and seaplane flights and the Long Island Rail Road offer other ways east, each with its own cost and schedule. A private car is best when you want door-to-door service and luggage space, and it can also connect you to East Hampton Airport or Gabreski for a flight.

Thursday versus Friday: a comparison

A Thursday-evening departure usually avoids the worst of the eastbound crush, while Friday afternoons bring the heaviest traffic. Leaving Thursday evening or very early Friday morning can save a significant amount of time, and you arrive to a calmer weekend.

Picking your travel window

• Best: Thursday evening, early Friday morning and Monday mornings.
• Fair: midday Friday and Saturday morning.
• Hardest: Friday afternoon and evening, and Sunday afternoon and evening.

Return-day tips

If you must return on Sunday, leave before lunch or after dinner rather than mid-afternoon. Eat before you leave, fill up the car and pack the night before so the departure is quick. Tell your chauffeur about any stops so we can plan the timing.

Airports as an alternative
