How to Get to Fire Island: Ferry Terminals in Bay Shore, Sayville and Patchogue

Fire Island has no through road for most visitors, so the ferry is the way in. Choosing the right terminal depends on where you are staying. Here is the guide.

The three main terminals

Bay Shore: ferries serve several Fire Island communities, including Ocean Beach and Saltaire.
Sayville: ferry service to Cherry Grove and Fire Island Pines.
Patchogue: ferries to Davis Park and Watch Hill on the eastern side.

Timing your ride

Summer weekends are busy, and the last ferry back can be a firm deadline. Arrive at the terminal early, particularly with luggage, groceries or coolers, and confirm your return time when you go out.

Robert Moses State Park

Robert Moses State Park on the western end of Fire Island is reachable by the Robert Moses Causeway, which gives drive-in access to parking and beaches without a ferry, though lots can fill on summer weekends.

Packing tips

Bring only what you can carry on and off the ferry; many communities have no cars.
Pack coolers, beach gear and groceries in wheeled or backpack-style bags where possible.
Wear shoes you can walk in, since boardwalks and sandy paths are common.

Ferries run more often in summer, with reduced schedules in spring and fall and limited service in winter.
