JFK vs LaGuardia vs Newark: Which NYC Airport Should You Use?

New York has three major airports, and the right one depends on where you are going, which airline you fly and how much traffic you can stand. Here is a plain comparison.

JFK: the international gateway

John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens is the region’s main international hub, with the widest choice of long-haul flights and airlines. It is also the airport farthest from Manhattan on most routes, so plan extra time, especially at rush hour. It is the natural choice for trips to Brooklyn, Queens, southern Long Island and the Hamptons.

LaGuardia: closest to Midtown

LaGuardia, also in Queens, is the closest major airport to Midtown Manhattan and is popular for domestic and short-haul business travel. Its position beside the Grand Central Parkway means traffic can build quickly, so a reliable pickup time matters. It is convenient for Manhattan, Queens, Nassau County and the North Shore.

Newark: the New Jersey option

Newark Liberty International sits in New Jersey and is a major hub for United Airlines. It is often the best choice if you are travelling to New Jersey, and can be competitive for Manhattan depending on the tunnel and bridge traffic. Add time for the Holland and Lincoln Tunnel approaches.

How to choose

• Going to Long Island or the Hamptons: JFK or LaGuardia, or Long Island MacArthur if you can fly there.
• Going to Manhattan: LaGuardia is closest, but compare fares and airlines across all three.
• Going to Connecticut or Westchester: LaGuardia, or Westchester County Airport for a shorter trip.
• Going to New Jersey: Newark.

Newark depends on the New Jersey Turnpike, Route 1&9 and the Holland and Lincoln tunnels, so a single incident can add significant time. Early mornings, late afternoons and Sunday evenings are the busiest periods at all three airports. Holidays and summer weekends add more traffic. For departures, leave enough time for traffic, check-in and security; for arrivals, allow for baggage claim and, on international flights, customs.

Travelling with children, older relatives or mobility needs changes the calculation. Shorter walks to gates, easier curbside access and predictable pickup points matter more than a small difference in drive time.
